Emilia White has won the Democratic Primary for Spring Valley Village Trustee!

Emilia was our candidate for East Ramapo School Board in 2009.  She is married to Steven White, editor of this e-newsletter. Emilia has become well known for standing up to bullying from the school board presidents.

Emilia stood out from a crowded field of candidates earning 40% more votes than the next highest vote getter. Those who wish to congratulate her or help with the campaign for the Nov 5th General Election can contact her at happykcc@hotmail.com

What happens in local elections does affect our situation in the schools.  It is important for us all to go out and vote.  To vote in a party primary election, you need to be a member of that party.

Two candidates in local elections in this year’s Democratic Primary have actively supported our candidates for school board over the years:

    • Emilia White (Spring Valley Trustee) Emilia was our candidate for East Ramapo School Board in 2009.  She is married to Steven White, editor of this e-newsletter. Emilia has become well known for standing up to bullying from the school board presidents.
    • Rita Louie (Haverstraw Town Supervisor) Rita has taken responsibility for our door-to-door campaign in her neighborhood several times.

One candidate this year has been part of the opposition to our movement.  Dan Friedman worked for the local paper which notoriously published its view that “the board needs to be accountable to (private schools) first.”

1) Governor Cuomo Vetoes S7722:

Governor Cuomo has vetoed S7722, the “special education placement bill”. He says: “This bill unfairly places the burden on taxpayers to support the provision of a private education”.

The East Ramapo School Board has been doing just that with its unapproved placements which continue to be a violation of State Regulations.

Power of Ten submitted a petition with 1715 signatures asking Governor Cuomo to veto this bill. We congratulate him for doing the right thing and for noting that part of the reason for his decision was communication he received from “hundreds” of individuals. East Ramapo was the only local school board not to write the governor requesting a veto. You can call Governor Cuomo at 518-474-8390, and thank him for vetoing S7722.

2) “Advocates for Justice” needs YOU:

The New York-based public interest law firmAdvocates for Justice, on behalf of 14 East Ramapo parents and community members, said it is calling for the removal of five board members and the appointment of a an overseer to remedy rampant abuses of office within the ERCSD School Board, and prevent future abuses. This major development has been covered in The New York Times and The Journal News, and featured with Art McFarland on Channel 7 Eyewitness News.

The Concerned Citizens of East Ramapo is a new group which has formed and endorsed a slate of candidates for the East Ramapo School Board who are committed to putting “children first”.

Dear Neighbor,
The stakes in this upcoming election for the East Ramapo Board of Education have never been higher. Nothing less that the fundamental value of a free public education is on the line. Decisions made by the present majority of board members have led to failed fiscal management and the moral bankruptcy of our school system.
It is time to change who leads our schools. You see, the American promise has always been that we educate all our children so they are prepared to become members of a democratic community. The defining issue of this upcoming board election is how to keep that promise alive.
We can settle for a dysfunctional school system that fails to use our tax dollars to educate students and also reduces the value of our homes or, we can begin to restore a school system where every child has a fair shot at success.
The Concerned Citizens of East Ramapo, a group of citizens who organized to restore our schools to the levels of excellence that in years past attracted a diverse group of parents to our community, have endorsed our slate because we are committed to putting “children first”. We are going to do whatever it takes to restore the mission of the board of education to protecting every child’s civil right to a free, public education.
Folks, this is a make or break moment for our children and our community.

ERCSB School Board Demotes Superintendent!

Hi All,

The East Ramapo School Board led by Aron Wieder demoted Dr. Ira E. Oustatcher Superintendent of Schools. Dr. O has been made the Director of Special Student Services at a salary of $252,000, while Dr. Joel Klein was given a raise from $144,000 to $242,000 to be the interim. Basically the two administrators switched places.

So we are going to layoff of teachers and give an administrator a $98,000 raise. This lunacy during these difficult financial times!
